Watimang Landok

I find great pleasure in listening to folk music from any corner of the earth. It is like a small taste of the soul of a culture. We (Malaysia) have so many beautiful folk songs too. My all time favourite is Cinta Sayang, given that I am anak Kedah after all! Some say that Cinta Sayang belongs to Perlis State while some say that it is Kedah’s. It is not a big deal, really. Kedah and Perlis have always been grouped together. Inseparable, like Siamese twins.

I have been downloading some music again the last few days. Although it is nice to listen to Mari Boine’s yoik while looking at the mountains and the sea from my living room, it is something else to listen to Malay folk songs and look at the same thing. To me, it gives a sense of contentment. A feeling that may best be summed up as *I’m happy to be here but I’m also happy to be myself*.

I love Terengganu’s Watimang Landok. Listen to it, as it will do strange things to you. I played it out loud a couple of days ago and my kids who were peacefully playing with Lego blocks on the floor suddenly jumped up and started dancing! Never mind the fact that their dance steps were a cross of hip hop and Mat Sentul’s! If this song has no effect on you, let me tell you something…

…YOU HAVE DEFINITELY LOST YOUR MOJO! :D

(CHORUS)Watimang watimang landok
Landok sesama landok
turun ke pantai lah dek nandung membeli beras

Kalau hendok sesama hendok
Watimang watimang landok
Gajoh berantai lah dek nandung
Lagikan terlepas...

********

Nyor manih pelepoh lembut
Watimang watimang landok
Habis dimakang lah dek nandung
si gajah gila,

Mulut manis hati pong lembut
Watimang watimang landok
Bagaimanalah dek nandung
hatilah dok giler...

(CHORUS)

Balik bukit kerja raya
Watimang watimang landok
Tempat orang lah dek nandung
gergaji kayu,
tuan tak belas melihat saya
Watimang watimang landok
Siang malang lah dek nandung
menanggung rindu

(CHORUS)

Pisang kelat masok di recoh
watimang watimang landok
daun selasih lah dek nandung
ku lurut juga
Bulang gelap tanoh pong lecoh
Watimang watimang landok
Hati kasih lah dek nandung
ku turut juga

(CHORUS)

Was imagining your children doing the hip hop/Mat Sentul while listening to the song... where did they learn those steps from? :)

I always love listening to Malaysian folk songs. Kalau nak keep me awake while driving long distance, give me the folk songs anytime - better than the modern lagu-lagu tangkap lentok.

Aunty Naz,
If you get the chance to visit the hinterlands of Malaysia, in a car that has a working radio, just tune in to the local radio station. We especially like the Kota Bharu one. There's a song that starts with: kelepek, kelepuk, kelepak...
There's a Siti Nurhaliza version of Watimang Landok if we're not mistaken. purrr....meow!
This cat is still learning to play the didgeridoo...

dear yr highness QOTH,

i'm guessing that "watimang landak" = wau timang landak.

the kites of eastcoast have many names, according to the different shapes. there are:

- wau bulan ['wabulè' in kelantan and 'wabulang' in terengganu]
- wau kenyut bahu ['wakenyutbau]
- wau burung [waburung]
- wau merak [wamerok
- wau kucing [wa kucing]
- wau pari [wapari]
- etc2

if we go by the dance of wa bulè [with the famous "teraaaju tigo"], then all these wau dances probably mimic the way each kite is "timang" by the wind as it flies. or perhaps the "timang" may refer to the hoisting movements of the kite-flyer.

p.s. hopefully some knowledgeable oghang gganu [like awang goneng or puteri kama or pokku bustaman or pakcik hassan of al-manar] can kompom wat ambo paka angga jah. ;D

aisay, kecek panjè2 pasa watimang ggapo nih buat ambo raso macè nok nnari pulok doh!
