AKU

File:Chairil Anwar.jpg

AKU
Kalau sampai waktuku
'Ku mau tak seorang kan merayu
Tidak juga kau
Tak perlu sedu sedan itu
Aku ini binatang jalang
Dari kumpulannya terbuang
Biar peluru menembus kulitku
Aku tetap meradang menerjang
Luka dan bisa kubawa berlari
Berlari
Hingga hilang pedih peri
Dan aku akan lebih tidak perduli
Aku mau hidup seribu tahun lagi

---Chairil Anwar (Maret 1943)---

oooh, lovely naz!

i've always loved this poem of chairil anwar. to me, it's evocative of 'do not go gentle into that good night' by dylan thomas. but even more impactful because it's in bahasa rumpun sendiri.

Hi Azieda!
Chairil Anwar was an Indonesian poet in the 1940s. *Aku* was one of his most popular ones.
I love the individualistic ideas in this poetry and the sense of vitality that is common in all his work.
Some people reacted to the phrase *aku ini binatang jalang* when in actual fact, it is metaphoric more than anything else ;)
...it was a sincere expression of humility.

Salam Mek Yam,
(rindunya kat you!)
I love his work. I think it's the impact of being far away that I'm beginning to dig all these out again!

For someone who reads more English poetry than Malay, I like this! came across it some time ago and feel that his words are deep. thanks for sharing!

the nice thing about a poem is we can pretty much endow it with any meaning we want. :)

however with this one, if we look at it from a purely surface level, one could say chairil anwar had a sense of his own fatality and wanted to give it a piece of his mind.

chairil suffered from poor health most of his short life and succumbed to tuberculosis at the young age of 26 (this poem was written when he was abt 20 years old, i think). that's probably the reason a number of his poems has 'death' as theme.

but that in no way diminish the impact of this incredibly powerful poem. it's highly emotional but not your typical jiwang malay sajak. the words are terse yet pregnant with barely supressed anguish and defiance. one can feel how they rush on each other's heel to that final crescendo.

as (death) defiant poems go, personally "aku" grabs my guts more than those famous english ones like "do not go gentle into that good night" of dylan thomas or john donne's famous sonnet "death be not proud".

while thomas's defiance was grim and quiet and donne's was scoffing, anwar's defiance bellowed and literally shook its fist. well, as long as his works are revered and remembered, he would live 1000 tahun lagi. perhaps even more! :)

Mek Yam,
True. As it is now, there are so many interpretations of Aku. Some said that it was an ode to his parents: they divorced and he followed his mother. Some said that it was a cry for freedom and independence from the Dutch. And then of course, there's the struggle and relection of the Self.
There are even conflicting views on the cause of his death-.

Aaaaanyway, I fall for Chairil Anwar's work because of the fine combination of simple, everyday words and very strong semantics.
